About Nicaragua:

Nicaragua is the 2nd poorest nation  in the western hemisphere, second only to Haiti. It is situated in the heart of Central America, wedged between the Caribbean and the Pacific. More than 400 years of slavery, imperialist and corporate exploitation, civil war, earthquakes and hurricanes has left the country accustomed to extreme poverty and dependent on the very systems that threatened their lives daily.

Perhaps the most influential event was the 15 year civil war. After the revolutionary war which overthrew a dictatorship, a revolution lasted more than 3 years.  In this period a new educational infrastructure was created, health programs flourished and the economy blossomed.  Unfortunately, US economic interests feel and the second part of the war was funded and perpetuated for a decade by the US government and left the country with  virtually no infrastructure.

Capitalist exploitation of labor and resources supports the poverty thus  limits health care, education, agriculture growth, and other local economic opportunity. We call this Economic Occupation. In the last few years, sustainable and localized projects have been making drastic changes in the well-being of the poorest communities, and fighting back, one clinic, farm, and school at a time.
